Maroon Baseball Breaks Out Offensively to Salvage Split against Dubuque and Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team poured on the offense in the nightcap to go 1-1 in Saturday action. The Maroons (1-3 record) picked up their first win of the season.

Game One – Dubuque 7, UChicago 5

The opening game of the day went long as UChicago and University of Dubuque took 14 innings to reach a result.

Junior pitcher Brenton Villasenor started the game on the mound and went five innings, striking out three. First-year Zach Morochnik entered the game with the bases loaded and pitched his way out with a strikeout and a double play. Morochnik threw five innings of relief.

Senior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen, first-year infielder Brian Lyle and junior outfielder Connor Hickey each recorded two hits. Junior first baseman Brady Sarkon also jacked a solo home run.

Game Two – UChicago 15, Greenville 4

The Maroons broke out the bats and big innings resulted in their night game versus host Greenville College.

The top of the fifth inning featured the dam break for UChicago's offense as the visitors put up nine runs in the frame. Twelve-straight batters reached base in that inning, including two fielder's choices. Larsen doubled twice to drive in three. First-year infielder James Kelly, sophomore infielder Drew Ventrelle and junior catcher Ian Bohn each tallied RBI singles.

Earlier in the game, Lyle smacked a two-run single in the top of the second. The final onslaught came in the ninth inning with a quartet of runners crossing home plate. Two-straight errors and a Larsen sacrifice fly got things off on the right foot. Sarkon and sophomore infielder Payton Jancsy singled in one apiece. Kelly capped it off with a RBI double to left center.

Sophomore pitcher Jacob Petersen (1-0 record) tossed the opening five innings to get the win. He struck out six with two earned runs, four hits and two walks. First-year David Clarke was responsible for the next four innings on the mound. Clarke piled up five strikeouts with one unearned run, two hits and a walk.

UChicago racked up 15 hits, but also committed five errors defensively. The hit parade was led by Jancsy's 4-for-5 effort (two RBI). Larsen, Bohn and Kelly each went 2-for-5 with a combined eight RBI.
