CHICAGO – After his successful return to competition over the weekend, University of Chicago men's tennis player David Liu was selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Liu was back in varsity action on Saturday and Sunday, after missing the past 14 months due to injury. The senior stepped right into UChicago's starting lineup at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles for the second and third rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship.
Liu went a perfect 4-0 overall against his opponents from Augustana College and No. 9-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. He rolled through singles by scores of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2. Playing alongside classmate Nicolas Chua, he also triumphed 8-5 and 8-3 in doubles.
The No. 7-ranked Maroons advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in program history. They will next play No. 5-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday, May 21 in Claremont, Calif.
