Maroons women's basketball blows past Mount St. Joseph 80-52

CHICAGO, Ill. -- An efficient scoring effort in the post gave the University of Chicago women's basketball team an 80-52 win over College of Mount St. Joseph on Sunday.

The Maroons (3-7) won its second-straight game while the Lions (3-8) lost its second in-a-row.

UChicago's 80 points marked a season high, as did the 28-point margin of victory. The story of the day was in the paint, where the Maroons outscored the Lions 42-10. UChicago effectively ran sets that resulted in open layups for the forwards and driving bank shots for the guards. The advantage inside was also manifested in the rebounding totals, where the hosts led 46-33 and also blocked eight shots.

Early on, the visitors were ahead 16-9. UChicago kept chipping away and closed the half with five layups and five free throws to go into the break up 37-29. Ellie Greiner was the main recipient offensively as the 6-foot-2 sophomore scored 14 points on 6 of 6 shooting. UChicago's guards frequently penetrated into the lane and slipped the ball behind the defense to Greiner for open layups throughout.

The momentum stayed firmly with the Maroons in the second half. The hosts went on a 28-5 run and eventually led by as many as 30 points. Point guard Morgan Donovan aggressively drove to the rim, made contested shots and also drew fouls to get to the free throw line. The sophomore ended up with a team-best 16 points.

Four UChicago players reached double digits in points and 10 players were on the court for double digits in minutes. The 22 made free throws marked a season-high for the Maroons.
