KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In its first action of the season, the University of Chicago men's tennis team came out sharp on day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Friday. All told, they posted a 2-0 doubles record and an 8-1 singles record on the day.
The morning doubles session went according to plan. Both of UChicago's doubles tandems ran roughshod over the opposition by matching 8-1 scores. The No. 1-seeds Erik Kerrigan/Ninan Kumar downed John Carroll University, while No. 3-seeds Tyler Raclin/Joshua Xu beat Wheaton College.
Singles play opened with four Maroons in the mix. No. 4-seed senior Erik Kerrigan took down DePauw University (6-2, 6-2) and Lake Forest College (6-1, 6-4) in straight sets. No. 8-seed junior Jeremy Yuan, who is a two-time ITA singles finalist at this event, defeated Kenyon College 6-4, 6-0 and DePauw 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Joshua Xu bulldozed Webster University 6-1, 6-1 and Oberlin College 6-2, 6-2.
First-year Sachin Das made his collegiate debut and started strong with two wins. He nearly shut out Trine University 6-0, 6-1 and followed up with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Kenyon. However, his Case Western Reserve University opponent topped him in the round of 32 by scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
