CHICAGO – The No. 20 University of Chicago women's basketball team was able to hold off two stellar individual offensive performances from Carthage College with timely answers of its own as the Maroons secured their seventh-straight win in Sunday's 82-74 victory.
Senior Mia Farrell led the way with 18 points and added four rebounds and three assists and classmates Miranda Burt (two blocks, two assist) and Taylor Lake (eight rebounds, two blocks) had 16 points each. Rookie Grace Hynes added nine points, eight rebounds and six assists to aid in the win.
UChicago (8-2) built upon a 39-38 halftime lead with a big third frame, outscoring the Lady Reds (4-5) 21-14. The Maroons ended the quarter on an 8-3 run, aided by two-straight 3s by Alina Brennan and a fast-break layup by Peyton Van Soest (courtesy of a Grace Hynes full-court assist).
But Carthage still had a run left of its own in a back-and-forth fourth frame, led by a career-night from guard Autum Kalis, who finished with 32 points. Kalis had 12 points in the final 10 minutes, as the visitors cut the lead to two on a Kalis jumper with 6:22 to go.
Burt was there to respond for the Maroons with a timely 3-pointer and Lake added a layup to push the advantage back seven, 69-62. A Lucy Schmid triple made it a 10-point lead, 74-64, as it appeared UChicago might pull away. Kalis would have none of it, though, as the guard scored five-straight points – including a three-point play on a hanging jumper – to trim the lead back to three, 75-72, with 1:10 left.
This time it would be UChicago's Klaire Steffens with the answer, as Burt found the sophomore for a fast-break bucket and the foul, and she made the ensuing free throw to make the lead six, 78-72.
Kalis' answer was stopped by a Burt block and she and Farrell would close out the game each with a pair of free throws to give UChicago its eighth win of the year. Carthage led the Maroons by as many as seven (23-16) early in the first quarter, but Lake (10 first-half points) and Hynes (nine first-half points) helped swing the momentum back to the hosts before the half.
The Maroons shot a blistering 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field and 44 percent (11-of-25) from 3-point land compared to 41.7 percent (30-of-72) and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) for the Lady Reds for the game. UChicago did commit more turnovers (16-11) but the Maroons' benched outscored Carthage, 19-0.
Sammie Woodward added 24 points for the Lady Reds in the setback.
