ELMHURST, Ill. -- The 16th-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team won three of four matches Friday and Saturday at the Elmhurst College Invitational.
Chicago opened the weekend with a 25-19, 25-11, 26-24 win over Simpson College (12-17). Senior outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) and junior middle blockers Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) and Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) each had six blocks in the victory.
Brander then hit 19 kills and added seven blocks as the Maroons defeated Wheaton (Ill.) College (16-12) 25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18 in Friday's second contest. Belak (11), Smalls (10), and sophomore outside hitter Morgan Clark (Purcellville, Va./ Loudon Valley) (10) also hit double-digit kills.
Chicago won Saturday's first match over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (19-12) 25-14, 26-24, 25-19 behind nine kills from Brander and Smalls.
No. 19 Elmhurst (25-9) then handed the Maroons (27-4) a 25-19, 26-28, 25-21, 25-21 loss in the tournament finale. Smalls hit a team-high 16 kills, while Clark totaled 14.
Junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy), who averaged 5.5 digs per set on the weekend, was named to the all-tournament team.
Chicago will remain idle until it travels to Manhattan for the University Athletic Association Championship Nov. 4-5.
